Lawrence Dodd Suffolk Open winnerLawrence Dodd, the former England amateur international, won the Suffolk Open Championship at Bury St Edmunds where he started his golfing career.

A spectacular third and final round of 66, thought to be a professional course record, left him five shots clear of his closest rivals.

Dodd, who was ineligible to play in this event until he started his PGA training at Bury Golf Range, last October, has now completed the set of Suffolk titles. He won the amateur championship in three times in 2000, 2001 and 2003, the Suffolk match play title in 2001 and 2002 as well as the junior stroke play and match play trophies.

Dodd was the first professional winner of the Faraday Cup since Simon Dainty in 2006. Faraday, incidentally, was the first Suffolk Golf Union president in 1924 and served as president from 1926 to 1935.

Although Dodd started as pre-tournament favourite on course he knows so well it was a different matter after his opening round of 75. He trailed fellow professional Paul Wilby of Haverhill by seven shots with Jack Cardy of Hintlesham lying second with two under par 70 and holder Patrick Spraggs of Stowmarket and Aldeburgh’s Will Wright signing for level par 72.

It was all change on the second day. Spraggs produced a second round of 68 to take the lead at four under par. Few would at that stage have backed against him repeating Robin Mann’s hat-trick of Suffolk Open successes. It was in the final 45 minutes that the real picture emerged. Dodd finished in style with birdies at the final two holes to be five under par for the tournament.

Golf professional Lawrence Dodd captured his second tour victory at the Pro 66 Tour Final at Walton Heath Golf Club this week.

Lawrence Dodd 66 Pro Tour WinnerDodd, from Bury St Edmunds won the title on the third hole of a sudden death playoff after a 7 under par round.

Starting in heavy rain Dodd carded a steady front nine of one under par. A change in weather brought sunshine and birdies to Dodd’s back nine. Three birdies saw him move to four under standing on the 16th tee. A look at the score board showed Lloyd Campbell in the clubhouse with a 65. Dodd proceeded to birdie the last 3 holes sinking a swinging 12 foot putt on 18 to force a playoff.

As darkness approached Dodd hit the 18th fairway and made par on the first 2 play off holes matching Campbell. The last minutes of light saw Dodd’s approach finish 6 feet from the hole and when Campbell could only make par Dodd holed out for the win.

Dodd who is sponsored by Bury St Edmunds based G Signs & Design said “I am delighted to win my second title this year. After a near miss in a playoff at the Europro Tour final a few weeks ago I was determined to win this one in front of the Sky Sports cameras! I am confident with my game heading into European Tour school. ”

Lawrence Dodd Maiden WinGolf professional Lawrence Dodd captured his first tour victory in Morocco on the new Gary Player designed Golf de Mogador course. Dodd, from Bury St Edmunds, was making his debut on the Alps Golf Tour and won the event with a stunning 17 under par total of 199.

Gusting high winds affected the event but Dodd and Scotland’s Gavin Dear pulled clear of the field with matching opening rounds of 68 and 64. The final round saw both players locked together until three consecutive birdies from the 14th saw Dodd close out a comfortable three shot victory.

Dodd who is sponsored by Bury St Edmunds based G Signs & Design and Hayden Environment services said “I am delight to win my first professional event. The course and people in Morocco were fantastic and very supportive. It was great to lift the trophy, make so many birdies and see all of the years of practice pay off!”
